MANUAL HANDLING ASSESSMENT FAQs

Manual Handling Assessment

What are my legal duties?

  • Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling
  • Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that cannot be avoided
  • Reduce the risk of injury

Are there legal weight limits?

No limits are laid down in the Regulations. Instead, an ergonomic assessment of the manual handling will determine the risk of injury. This must take account of a range or factors and not just the weight of the load.

We don’t employ “handlers.” Do we need a manual handling assessment for an office?

Yes. Manual handling injuries account for around one third of all reportable injuries across all industries. Often it those employees who are not considered to be “handlers” and who are not properly equipped, instructed and trained who suffer injury.
